Classroom Management  Philiosophy

My first grade teacher Mrs. McEhaen once told me, "My classroom is your classroom, and together we both should feel happy and safe." Mrs. McEhaen was right. Your classroom should make you feel happy and safe. I believe that creating a positive learning environment is the only way for my students to thrive. We grow when we feel nourished and cared for, not neglected and unheard. On the first day of class, I believe setting up that foundation for trust with my students and each other is important. Getting to know each other is on my priority list, so I would love do some activities where we can get up and get moving while becoming aquianted.

During the first weeks of class, I believe that teaching my students the procedure of both my classroom and the school is extremely important. Wong & Wong have steps for each procedure in the their book about teaching, rehearsing, and reinforcing. When I present my initial plan, I will have a syllabus for the students for them to take home and maybe even go over with a guardian/parent. There will clear expectations for both myself and the students, I think modelling the procedures for them will remind them that I, as a teacher will also be help to the same standards. "All procedures must be practiced," (Wong & Wong, 48). The students will get used to being in my classroom by just practicing. Also I would like them to remember that mistakes are made, and so we must forgive and try again. Practice takes time and younger grades may not know that and it'll be hard for them at first to be at certain standards.

How will I deal with misbehavior in my classrrom? I fully believe that misbehavior should not be over-looked or ignored. I do believe that misbehavior comes from an unorganized classroom, although I do know that students will fight over other situations. I hope to have students be able to effectively communicate their needs and emotions to myself and their peers. I would like to have "Peace Patrol" in my classroom, and their goal would be to help their peers work their arguments and come to a conclusion that will appease both parties involved.

In the end, I believe that the goal of education is to better ourselves and our students with the knowledge we have been so privileged with. We must teach not only academic knowledge but to be an outstanding human being. A student spends most their week in a classroom with their teacher, so they look to us to model what it looks like to be responsible, respectful, and joyful people. I want my students to leave my classroom proud of their accomplishments and strides in their journeys. My students will move on to the next class and be the example of what I taught them. I can only hope that I taught them to be kind and respectful.
